Cole Hovind: Artist Statement

Animals evolved over the years to have talons, scales, barbs, and more. These adaptations are there to detour predators, and aid in survival. However we as humans are the only species that is constantly creating new ways to kill ourselves. We are also the only species that strives to be remembered we wish to leave a “mark” so to speak on this world whether it be one of joy or sadness. I use these surfaces inspired by nature to play with this idea on two levels.

By placing my talons, nubs and spikes upon my work I force the user to avoid injury through conscious handling, but also offer a vessel to hold sustenance to continue their existence. I attach these obstacles to remind us that despite our advancements we have become fragile, nit-picky creatures. Our greatest strength is our creativity, we as a species has accomplished much of what we have today through creation, and invention. However, we tend to forget about where we came from, as well as the complexity that goes into the mass production of these objects that are meant to hold the food and water that we live off of. There is a man behind the invention of the machines that produce those objects, and another behind their design.

I believe I'm subconsciously driven by the fear of not being remembered for the work I create. I work in a medium that is proven to withstand the test of time for decades and eons. I do so in hopes that once I'm gone, and my ashes scattered, those who have acquired my work will have passed it down through their own volition. The inheritor will grab my work and perchance be pricked, or made uncomfortable. Through the use of these elements of play, and caution they will be made to think of its origins, how best to handle it moving forward and...me. Even if I and those who knew me are long since gone.

Matthew M Burrill: Artist Statement

Musical Abstractions: An Interpretation of Sound is a series developed around my emotional response to sounds and music. I spend time with the music. I listen to it on repeat. I allow it to envelop me, to capture me. Then I begin to set up for the session. I feel the heartbeat of the sound as I contemplate my approach to the individual painting. Considering composition, colors, gestures, I rely on anything I can to mentally prepare. The music acts as my guide. It’s meditation for me. The ritual of it all provides a deep level of depth. I channel my soul into this work. Without this approach, I find I cannot perform. Once the hour is complete, I am ready to begin painting.

I hit play.

I let out my breath, and the music begins.

Abigail Hanna: Artist Statement

These four character designs were inspired at first by a series of dreams I had. I later refined the characters from those dreams to be based on the four seasons. I imagine them to be goddesses of the four seasons, each controlling different aspects: Winter is an angel of death, Spring is rebirth and new life, Summer is the spirit of adventure, and Autumn is the acceptance of change. I then focused on developing the relationships between them for my final piece, The Seasons’ Love.

Morgan Jaeger: Artist Statement

In this body of work, each of the nine animals represents a corresponding personality type from the Enneagram Personality Test. By taking this test and seeing what animal has similar traits as them, my goal is for viewers to relate to the complexity of the animal kingdom, and come away with a newfound admiration for the natural world we live in. My passion in creating art is emphasizing the connection between the natural world and the individual, as well as highlighting the uniqueness of every member of the natural order. By embracing the immense complexity of the planet, my hope is to encourage a sense of inspiration and awe that carries into each of our daily lives.

Rebecca Oehler: Artist Statement

Often the responsibility is put on women to protect themselves. We are held accountable for our own safety, expected to carry pepper spray and tasers, hold our keys in tightly held fists, know how to avoid danger, how to escape, how to say “no.” The reality is that these defensive practices don’t work in a society which doesn’t hold men accountable for their actions.

I created this environment, an installation merging printmaking, photography, and sculpture, to address the reality of these self-protective measures, which are merely a superficial solution for the larger societal issue of toxic male behavior. Encouraging women to carry pepper spray or not to go out at night isn’t enough; we must shift the conversation to men and address the ways in which toxic behavior is learned and endorsed by society.

Delia Touche: Artist Statement

In my work I have prints of Native American people dancing in traditional regalia. My artist book is a representation of the reservation, which is an aftermath of colonization. The other side is prairie life before European settlers came to the Americas. I use the monotype process to represent cultural dissipation within indigenous communities. The first prints are representations of a time when Native culture was undisturbed and vibrant; than the ghost image is that culture slowly fading into nothingness.

Emma Wiitamaki: Artist Statement

As an abstract artist, I make “odd” forms that depart from reality. I focus on color, texture, and shape. The contrast of rigid and soft materials create a tension that highlights the unity and variety of my forms. Bright colors accentuate my form’s presence in a space. I reference nature and the human body, as I seek to create objects that are peculiar. Unto themselves, these objects ask more questions than provide answers.

In my making process, I utilize fiber and papier-mâché. The process allows me to free-associate and to trust my intuition in my creative solutions. My use of materials is a purposeful process that consists of spending time with a piece. As I move forward in my sculpture career, I hope to make a larger body of work that in total will create a strange terrain.

Rosie Cunningham: Artist Statement

I am a multi-media artist. My work has two, sometimes overlapping concepts. The primary body of work confronts mental health conditions, attitudes towards women, and how our actions affect others. Other work juxtaposes man-made objects and nature.

I love expressing myself through art, but because of an illness in 2011 creating art takes a toll on my physical body, often leaving me in a state of exhaustion. I recreate familiar textures from memory because my illness left me with no feeling in my hands. As I work on a sculpture, I heal and grow through its development.

I have a curious mind and I am always searching for and experimenting with different mediums. Throughout my journey as an artist I have realized art does not have to be perfect to be beautiful.

Lynette Dullinger: Artist Statement

Here’s the Tea was first conceived of for a project I was creating in my junior year. I went with a different idea for that specific project, but Here’s the Tea stuck with me. The name came first. It’s a reference to a viral video shared often on the internet. In that context, “tea” means information, often alluding to gossip. I thought it would be fun to make a tea company that also gives out “tea”. This is what lead me to focus on environmental activism within the project. It doesn’t hurt that I enjoy a good cup of tea. Due to the name, I wanted the visuals to be very modern, but also fun and playful. I settled on using bright colors and sharp, clean angles to get that mood across. Using such a bright color palette was difficult, but I enjoyed the challenge. I hope you enjoy Here’s the Tea, and maybe even learn something new!

Stephanie Ehlers: Artist Statement

My sisters and I decided on becoming vegetarian fifteen years ago. It was one of the many things in which we were closely bonded. This series portrays the two animals that particularly influenced me into becoming vegetarian, cows and deer.

Living on a cattle farm as a small child and having a father and brothers whom enjoyed hunting, I was never comfortable seeing where meat came from. To me the cows were pets, some with names I’d given them. Which is why each animal in my photographs are named and titled after one of my childhood pets.

I tried capturing these animals in a way that shows a sense of personality as a being. The deer roaming the wild with a sense of curiosity and timidity, and the cattle in captivity with a sense of interest and friendliness.

While being vegetarian is a connection my sisters and I have shared for many years, it is now something I get to share with my two sons as they too recently have chosen this lifestyle.

Amanda Frost: Artist Statement

With the use of printmaking and performance I have highlighted themes of intimacy in both personal and romantic spaces. This body of work explores anti-establishment, feminist, and LGBTQIA+ themes within these intimate settings. My first set of prints titled “LGBTQIA+ series” references a body of work made by 19th century artist Mary Cassatt. She was in awe of Japanese woodblock artists in how they portrayed women in intimate spaces. In response Cassatt created imagery of 19th century modern French women within intimate settings. Her work as a feminist artist has been influential to me and I wanted to nod at her series of prints. My modern twist was to give recognition to those who identify within the queer community as well as subtly recognizing events that have happened throughout 2020.

This print series is a part of a bigger installation that is meant to transcend the viewer to feel as if they are in a counselor's office. In the video performance piece titled “Sex Education” I had each individual represent a different metaphor that is still being used today to teach abstinence in educational settings. Each object in the video is representative of the human body. These messages allow for harmful stereotypes and shame about human sexuality. Abstinence only lessons do not teach quality sexual education and withholds valuable information that should be readily available for youth.

My last print series are illustrated with gestural marks and organic imagery to express the spatial relation between figures. The titles of these prints reference lyrics from the musical “Spring Awakening” which tells the story of youth discovering their inner and outer tumult of adolescent sexuality. These androgynous figures are engaging in various embraces, but their relationship to one another could be interpreted in numerous ways. I aim to be brutally honest about corrupt governmental and religious systems and my artmaking process allows for me to bring light to issues I am passionate about.

Molly Goranson: Artist Statement

When it comes to creating both art and graphic design work my process is fairly similar. I start by just brainstorming different ideas, thoughts, or feelings I want to provoke, then I move onto looking for inspiration from my surroundings, books, or the internet and create a mood board that encapsulates whatever it is I am aiming to achieve. After that I start sketching as many thumbnails as I possibly can before moving to larger ones or the computer. Some ideas also come from experimenting or learning new techniques and styles in my free time as well.

My senior project is an organization that is working to educate and promote the education of new and first-time pet owners. This is a topic I chose because I really love dogs and would love to have one but I know that I am not currently in a place where I can properly take care of a pet so I opted to learn more about them instead until I can. The premise of educating pet owners also stemmed from noticing that many animals end up in humane societies and shelters because their owner wasn’t prepared for or aware of the amount of responsibility and resources a pet requires. So, I decided to create an organization that educated pet owners so they are prepared and can be the best possible parent to their pet as they can be.

Haley Neil: Artist Statement

My inspiration comes from the great north. Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota I have come to love the outdoor lifestyle of those in the Midwest. Growing up I enjoyed visiting apple orchards during the fall, my favorite season of the year here in Minnesota. This is where my idea for North Ciders came from. I am a huge fan of hard ciders and wanted to create a cider that not only had a Midwest theme to it, but also a cider that would be appealing to all genders. I kept my color palette gender neutral and incorporated images that I have captured throughout road trips around the Midwest. Everything I have created was done by digital media. As for the images I incorporated some of my own photography. The main goal for this project was to show case my joy for packaging design and some appreciation for where I come from.

Molly Westrick: Artist Statement

I started the process of creating Loon Brew last December with the idea of a Minnesota based coffee shop that focuses on nature as a combination of all my favorite things. It had no name, no business plan, and most intimidatingly no design concept. The beginning of a project is always the most frustrating part for me. With endless possibilities ahead it is my job as a graphic designer to curate a design plan that makes sense for the brand. It has to be a fine balance between strategy and visual appeal. Over the past ten months I’ve created a coffee company with consistent design across all media. Every element including color choice, photography, and typography have been chosen to reflect the Minnesotan values of Loon Brew. Throughout each phase of the design process Loon Brew has morphed as I have learned more as a designer from personal research and the valued feedback of my peers, professors, and friends. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been part of my life while I worked on this project that is the culmination of the knowledge I’ve gained from my time at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Kristina Keller: Artist Statement

In my work for the past four years I generally explore the idea of ceramics as the utilitarian piece and as an art object. It is my intention to draw out basic forms such as various bowls and vases. Some of my larger pieces are made in multiple parts and assembled as one vessel. I explore glazing effects showing movement. My tall vases contain a lot of detail that is meaningful to me as they replicate the spaces I grew up in or spaces I have traveled. Sometimes my techniques are used to add visual texture and at times as with my slip trailing where I use a stiffer slip to have a tactile textured feel. t allows my pieces to appeal to more senses and be invited to touch and hold. My various approaches to making art have an impact on the viewer to explore details or sometimes more smooth, well-made, delicate yet sturdy vessels. My color and textural techniques speak to my lively and playful personality by being bright with color and highly detailed. It is my wish that people would use and enjoy my pottery daily. My pieces are mostly concentrated on being objects that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The high degree of texture added after the initial piece is crafted is where I concentrate my efforts to make the objects invite viewers in to take a closer look.

Lauren Kensok: Artist Statement

As a sculptor, I use humor as a catalyst for conversation. While my work often walks the line of the uncanny, I strive to make compelling sculptures or installations with materials that make the viewer stop. I’m inspired by the authenticity and vulnerability of our youth and show it through a strange juxtaposition of familiar materials. These materials—such as feathers, and fur, are purposeful, weird, and thoughtfully balanced in each sculptural composition.

My body of work addresses themes of life, longing, and death. As a society, we tend to turn away from topics that are uncomfortable as a way to cope or escape pain. Life and death are, subjectively, the most natural phenomena. While some may view this as morbid, I use it to ground my work and create a sense of security. My creative process allows for me to confront my own pain—allowing myself to feel, laugh, and grow.

In our evolving social climate, it’s important to me that people learn to communicate and share feelings while remaining civil in discussion. Throughout my life, I’ve used humor when communicating difficult topics with others because it allows for more meaningful and honest interactions. Regardless of the weight of a subject, humor has the power to bring people together in discussion—even on topics they don’t agree on.

AJ Kyllo: Artist Statement

I enjoy using multiple medias to capture concepts and images. Photography is one of these mediums that truly depict what I see every day. It brings a sense of peace and organization to my constant struggle to stay focused.

I found that photography has given me the visual vocabulary to actualize ideas that go beyond the picture, or just an object that doesn’t have much information to them. Ideally, my work is a representation of what I see throughout the day and night. I get into my car and just drive. Taking photos of objects or landscapes that are visually, or emotionally interesting to me brings out a fresh look at life’s natural beauty. Capturing images and combining certain photographs together to create a new piece and feeling from them bring a certain truth to how I view the world. Chaos and calm, violence and innocence combined into one image to create a response from how the others see my work.

Wako Nabana: Artist Statement

Wako Nabana is an international student from Japan. She is a graphic design student and learning how to apply software techniques to her works at Minnesota State University Moorhead. She transferred from Missouri Valley College to pursue her major. Because of her advisor at Missouri Valley College teaches her photograph technique, she has a strong background in photo development. In addition, she is good at using Japanese traditional patterns in her works.

Her previous school was tiny, and in a countryside school, she couldn’t get much experience of Graphic Design, but she could get a part time job at the printing office, which making bigger stuff, middle October 2019. The experience will help her a lot when she is making posters, banners, and so on.

She is kind of quick learner, and good at applying the new techniques and knowledge to her works well. She can get influenced easily, so her work style is really flexible, and each project’s work must be different. She is also curious, and she always search for new artistic styles. She usually applies techniques from Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube to her work.

Nikki Nilson: Artist Statement

Growing up, art was something that made me happy when I looked at it, and now that I’ve become an artist, I’d like to bring that feeling of happiness to those who view my work. I’ve been told that I’m “thinking inside the box,” that my job as an artist is to create thought provoking pieces that incite critical thinking, but that’s just not me. I’d like to create art that, when someone sees it, will make them smile, or brighten their day, even if it’s just a tiny bit. I don’t think having such a goal should be looked down upon. The world today is stressful and hectic. I think many have forgotten to stop and smell the roses. And it doesn’t matter if my art becomes the roses or is just something that reminds a person of roses; as long as it has been able to cast some amount of sunshine into a person’s day, then I’m happy.

Krista Talley: Artist Statement

Mental health is always a topic I have been passionate about. There is a lot of preconceived notions on the topic, but it is something everyone has and should be taking care of. This is why I decided to create a company that would promote healthy mental habits and make it easier to do so as well. Ease is a one stop shop for anything mental health related. It was important to me to make it as stress free for the customer as possible. Therefore, we offer classes, events, therapists, and products to help all at our one store. I also wanted to create an atmosphere that was welcoming and relaxing for customers. Our customers should be at ease at Ease.

Brittany Martin: Artist Statement

I wanted to create an abstract series that allowed the viewer to view an environment with new lenses. My work is about trying to look at the world from a different aspect. With my photographs, I experimented with black and white images and played with how they were being portrayed to the audience. I wanted to experiment with my own senses when working with these images. My work usually consists of animals and landscapes but working with abstract images helped expand my mind and what those images could potentially be, with experimenting with the way color is being played with and the layout.

My reasoning behind creating a set of abstract images was to allow myself access to new thoughts and ways of creating work. I am never tired of what I create but finding new methods and ways to portray my work helps expand my mind in other fields that I work in. The idea of abstract work opens my mind to what images and works can be and how they are represented. I find that working with new ideas allows my work to expand and allows me to find out more about what I would like to work with and what I find powerful within my work.

When thinking of what I wanted to work on for my Senior Project, I kept coming back to the idea of what do I love and what can I do with that. With that idea, I came up with a plant store. When going to plant stores or decorating my home, I often find it hard to know how to take care of some plants or finding information about what they do. I created an app for the plant store that would help those who are looking to take care of plant, to find out the benefits of plants and how to properly take care of them.

Along with the app I wanted the store itself to help with knowledge and creativity with plants by offering classes for the community.

My design and reasoning for the plant store was to work on a project that meant something dear to me that I encounter daily. By creating an app that helps navigate how to take care of plants to creating the designs that are for the store, made me proud to be working with different applications and methods. Being able to start out with just an idea and create a store mock-up of what would be displayed was exciting to work on. My work for the project helped me expand on how to create and work on ideas for myself and others.

Alexander Overmoe: Artist Statement

The creation behind CreSkate was an interest in an activity by someone who didn’t have access to viable learning equipment or locations growing up. Creskate Is an organization that travels the country raising money in small towns to renovate old, unused parks into skate parks for beginners. I grew up in a small town that did not have a skate park, but I had an interest in learning how to skateboard. I didn’t start learning how to skateboard until after I graduated high school and moved to a larger city. For this organization, I created multiple elements that would be useful for a company with this exact purpose.

I created a brand, business cards, packaging, clothing, stickers, a magazine ad, and a website. I designed these using the Adobe Suite programs Illustrator, photoshop, and InDesign. The overall driving force behind this brand is to bring something of interest into a city or town that did not have access to before. This force is displayed by new skate parks in those towns.

My medium of choice is clay. I find it to be as versatile and strong as my ideas but humbling when overexerted. My work is comprised of clean, repetitive patterns and forms. I find myself drawn to the possibilities created by using the multiple as it allows for compositions of small pieces to command a much larger presence. Unity is also created by using similar, but not identical, repetitive patterns on utilitarian sets to allow a clean, simplistic finish. The utility of my vessels is important to me because I want others to feel the strength and structure as they interact with the piece. My hope is that others can see the simple strength behind my vessels as they use them in everyday life.

The Armory Show was the first large exhibition of modern art in America held in Chicago, IL. The show was an important event in history, as it introduced Americans to experimental styles of art, serving as a catalyst for modern American art.

I created a brand inspired by this event called Armori – a magazine that highlights modern architecture in Chicago. As a graphic designer I created my project digitally and designed it using themes from architecture.

Celena Goldie: Artist Statement

In my artwork, I wanted to challenge myself and make something that will impact other's when they see it. My goal is to reach out and show people environmental subject's like poaching, deforestation, pollution and what happens to the ones who can't ask for help. Two of my drawings What’s Hidden Beneath and Shelter in a Barren Land deal with these topics. The first shows what pollution does to the community that needs it and the second shows a forest that was once a haven but now is a waste land.

Growing up in the country, I was always outside playing in the woods and exploring the ponds surrounding my home. It made me want to emphasize the outcome of the people disturbing the environment and not realizing that they’re doing harm to that community.

Along with my environmental views, I also enjoy capturing the bond between family. One of my favorite relationships to work with is a mother and her child. A Mother’s Embrace, My Whole World and Cradle are of mother’s that I know, and I wanted to create art that surrounded the tender love they have for their children. I grew to admire mothers and the strength that they have after seeing my own mother and grandmother’s hard work over the years. Over time I started to focus a lot of my art on this bond because it’s one that’s very dear to me.

My name is Sam Weld. I have a passion for music and love going to concerts. In times like these, it’s near impossible to get that live experience that concerts offer. I created EMRG with the intent of giving people a new live music experience and to promote up-and-coming artists in the local music scene. My passion for music and motion design allowed me to create stylish visuals that compliment the music. As a graphic design student, I was challenged with making a brand image that properly represents my mission. I wanted EMRG to have a visual style that can appeal to all types of people from casual music listeners to frequent concert-goers.

Motion graphics and music are a powerful combo, and I believe that people can still be moved by them the same way they could at a live event. Also, who doesn’t love a good light show?

Hello, my name is Devyn Shemon. I am completing my BFA in art education. I love creating in any way possible and experimenting with many different mediums throughout my work. Recently, I have been focusing on creating prints and paintings, but I also have a strong passion for ceramics and sculpture. In my work I mostly create non-objective abstract art and tend to focus on color and line. When I start a piece my first focus and the part I most enjoy is usually the colors I will use in the piece. I create art because it brings me joy. I truly love pushing myself to see what I can create. There is no better feeling to me then when I have an idea in my head so I work hard to execute it and it turns out even better than I thought. It also brings me joy seeing how my art makes others feel.
