IRB Online Training
Online training is required for all investigators, members of the IRB committee and Department Review Committee (DRC) members.
Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) uses the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) to provide the online training component for members of the MSUM community.
All faculty, students, and staff researchers proposing to use human subjects in research under the auspices of Minnesota State University Moorhead are required to complete the human participants training offered through CITI Training.
IRB proposals will be reviewed for approval after this training has been completed and verified.
NOTE: There is no charge for taking this course if you are a current MSUM student or employee and you register with your MSUM email.
- If you have never registered before (you do not have a CITI Program username) please go to the CITI Program website and register by clicking on "Register" button in the upper right corner.
- Enter Minnesota State University Moorhead.
- Agree to terms of service and affirm affiliation with MSUM.
- Follow remainder of prompts to create your account; when asked to select “Role in Research”, please select as follows:
- Principal Investigator - MSUM Faculty/Staff that are submitting their own research or are a faculty research advisor for a student.
- Co Investigator - MSUM Undergraduate and Graduate Student.
- IRB Members - MSUM IRB Committee members.
- If you already have a CITI Program username, please log into your account, go to Main Menu, and select "Click here to affiliate with another institution" link. Type and locate your institution via the dynamic drop down list.

- Save a copy of your completion certificate
- Attach a copy of your completion certificate to all IRB proposals that you submit
- IRB training expires in three (3) years

The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Human Research Protections oversees the federal guidelines regarding protection of human subjects in research and mandates all researchers to complete a training course in human subject protection for social behavioral research involving human participants.
