Economics, Law & Politics Department Learning Opportunities
The MSUM Department of Economics, Law & Politics takes great pride in the research opportunities offered to students. Our majors present at the university’s Student Academic Conference and compete at the national level in both research presented to national audiences and research published in peer-reviewed undergraduate journals. In addition, nearly one-third of our graduating seniors—10 to 15 students each year—go to graduate school, often being accepted to Big 10 universities with a high level of graduate funding.
The Economic Society is MSUM’s economic club. The student organization meets one a month to discuss economic issues, volunteer on campus and in the community, and attend economics and business-related events around the region. The Economic Society also holds a variety of professional and social activities that allow you to learn more about economics and engage in networking opportunities.
The Economics Lab, located in MacLean Hall 381, provides students with a welcoming setting to build peer connections; study in a quiet, comfortable space; collaborate on homework, research and class projects; interact with faculty and hold organization meetings.
Available resources include computers, economics textbooks and related reading materials. The Economics Lab also houses a collection of Center for Economic Education resource materials.
The Economics lab is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Internships are not required to complete your Political Science degree, but are an excellent way to gain experience and make connections within the community. Nearly 30 percent of students complete an internship. In doing so, you’ll gain real-world experience to enhance your resume and expand your career options. While most students intern in government offices, non-profits and businesses in the Fargo-Moorhead community, several have interned with government officials in Washington, D.C.
Students have completed internships with the following elected officials or organizations, among others:
- Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D.
- Former Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D.
- Former Rep. Rick Berg, R-N.D.
- Former Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.
- City of Moorhead
- City of Fargo
- KFGO
- The Arts Partnership
- Emergency Food Pantry

MSU Moorhead’s Student Academic Conference (SAC) provides an opportunity for student researchers to present their work to faculty, administration, peers and the community in a formal academic setting each April. You’ll have the chance to present your hard work in a variety of ways—panel discussions, workshops, multimedia presentations, displays and demonstrations—and gather constructive feedback to help you better analyze and continue exploration.
