Special Education Licensures
If you are entering to pursue a special education licensure but are not seeking a degree, you should apply as Graduate Unclassified (Special) students. To pursue any of the four licensure options listed below, you must meet Selection and Retention into Teacher Education (SARTE) requirements. In addition to meeting admission and coursework requirements, candidates will need to meet all state teacher licensure requirements in order to apply for teaching licensure in MN.
Teachers of Special Education: Developmental Disabilities
This licensure option provides candidates with expertise to teach students identified as Developmental Cognitive Disabilities (DCD). The required coursework reflects MN Board of Teaching approved programming for licensure in Developmental Disabilities (DD).
Teachers of Special Education: Early Childhood Special Education
This licensure option provides candidates with expertise to teach young students with disabilities (birth-age 6). The required coursework reflects MN Board of Teaching approved programming for licensure in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE).
Teachers of Special Education: Specific Learning Disabilities
This licensure option provides candidates with expertise to teach students identified with a Learning Disability (LD). The required coursework reflects MN Board of Teaching approved programming for licensure in Learning Disabilities (LD).
Teachers of Special Education: Physical and Health Disabilities
This licensure option provides candidates with expertise to provide evaluation and specially designed instruction to eligible children and youth from birth through age 21 who have medically diagnosed physical chronic or acute health disabilities. The required coursework reflects MN Board of Teaching approved programming for licensure in Physical and Health disabilities (PHD).
