Alum brings empathy to human resources one employee at the time

When Haley Catton walked onto the Minnesota State Moorhead campus as a first-year student, she couldn't have predicted she would be coaching managers and reshaping human resources practices in Montana.

"I loved my time at MSUM. It shaped my career and who I am today," she says.

Haley graduated in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in communications studies and a minor in human resources.

Today, Haley is the director of people operations at Complexly, where she makes sure that employees are happy, healthy, and successful. Her mission is clear: break the stigma around HR and ensure people feel heard, respected, and valued in their workplaces.

Haley credits Moorhead's communication courses, especially in business and professional settings, for giving her an edge when applying for jobs, even before graduation.

"I felt very equipped," she says. "The classes helped me learn how to navigate interviews, lead discussions, and adapt communication styles based on who I'm talking to. That's everything in HR."

It wasn't just coursework that made a lasting impression. Haley remembers how Moorhead's supportive atmosphere and strong sense of community gave her space to grow personally and professionally.

"College was some of the best years of my life," she says.

During her time at Moorhead, professors like Theresa Hest and Rebecca Gardner stood out for their style of presenting content in an accessible and interesting way. But also, for caring deeply about their students, which made her connect with the joy of supporting others.

Haley was in the honors learning community in her freshman year, where she created long-lasting friendships. She was also part of the GO!TEAM where she expanded her photography skills.

For five months, Haley studied abroad in Australia, where she lived and learned alongside international and local students at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

"It was a perspective-expanding experience," she says. "It made the world feel bigger and taught me how to adapt and connect across cultures."

Early in her career, Haley found her calling in helping others succeed. After eight years working in human resources, she is now leading teams with empathy to show that HR can be a safe and supportive environment.

"I love coaching managers," she says. "Helping them grow, communicate better, and support their people — that's my favorite part of the job."

Outside of work, Haley explores her creative side through photography — a hobby that took off during her time at Moorhead and now includes everything from landscapes to portraits.

Based in Montana with her husband and preparing to welcome their first child, Haley advises new students: "Say yes to opportunities, build relationships, and don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. It's where the magic happens."
