Foundation Feature: Peter Geib

Peter Geib’s family history at MSUM spans generations, and his impact on the university is also a great accomplishment. He has significantly impacted thousands of students as a professor at MSUM and hopes to further his contributions to MSUM as a member of the Foundation Board.

Description of how you’re connected to MSUM
Long-time connections; my Great Grandfather Frank Weld (Weld Hall) was president of MSUM for 20 years, from 1899 to 1919, my Grandfather Dr. Olaf Hagen (Hagen Hall) was the resident director as a community representative for many years, and my father Marvin Geib was football team doctor.

What energizes you in your role serving on the Foundation Board?
A chance to proactively contribute to education with like-minded individuals.

What inspires you to give back to the university with your time and talent?
To transform lives.

Who at MSUM inspires you?
Colleagues and hard-working, inspired students.

What experiences at MSUM have influenced your life the most? Which have helped you succeed?
Working with students and faculty in diverse disciplines and playing a major role in developing international business programming beginning in 1982, resulting in one of the first BS degrees in International Business in Minnesota. These efforts included study abroad programs such as the summer MSUM Oxford University International Business Program for six years and the first exchange program with a Chinese university at Tianjin University from 1988-89. These efforts also included developing an exchange program with Shanghai Finance University and teaching there. Efforts included substantial research in the Far East, Central Europe, Vietnam and Indonesia, and numerous presentations and publications.

How do you hope to support MSUM and/or students with your philanthropic involvement? What good do you hope will come from it?
To support continuous learning and financial contributions for scholarships, particularly in global leadership and international business.

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important?
Partnering with skilled professionals. It’s helping the Foundation become even more effective in realizing its mission.

What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
Be resilient, enthusiastic, and fair. Continue learning, values instilled by my parents.

In what ways have grit, humility and heart helped you in life?
Teaches me the importance of determination.

What does being a Dragon mean to you?
Identifying with the university’s strong educational mission.

How does being a Dragon continue to transform you today?
Promoting continual learning.
