Maximizing Your College Experience: Insights from President Tim Downs
President Downs talked with Ricot Aladin on a recent Professional Lunch podcast and shared his insights on how new and returning students can make the most of their college experience.
Get involved. Campus activities, student clubs, and organizations help you connect with other students and faculty members. There's something for everyone. "MSUM gives every student an opportunity for success," he says.
Participate in res life activities. Resident assistants create events of interest to students, such as movie nights, arts and crafts, and pizza parties. These activities help you meet other students with similar interests.
Strive for school-life balance. "Work will always be there, so you need to be able to disengage," Downs says. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally is how you can invest in yourself and maximize your college experience. "If you are physically and mentally balanced, you will have more success."
Be active. Downs recommends using the Russel & Ann Gerdin Wellness Center to get your body moving, whether it's a dance class, basketball, or using the massage chairs. "The business is human development, so invest in yourself," he says.
Develop power skills. Downs says power skills include the ability to work with others, use critical thinking, and being a well-informed, well-rounded individual. Downs recommends the Academic Success Center to help develop these skills. They also offer tutoring if you need help with a class or study tips.
Plan for your future. Downs advises students exploring careers to keep their eyes open and ask questions. "If you're feeling uncertain, find people in a similar field and ask them about their experiences," he says. The Career Development Center helps you with the job search, reviews your cover letter and resume, and assists in helping you apply to graduate school.
You can do it. Downs has one final piece of advice for students: "Believe in yourself, challenge yourself, and ask for help."
